Fade Haircut Blade Guide: Which Blades, Sizes & Lever Techniques for Every Fade Type

The fade is the most requested haircut in every barber shop — and the quality of your fade depends as much on your blade selection and lever technique as it does on your hand skills. A sharp, well-maintained blade set with the right size progression creates the seamless gradient that separates a professional fade from an amateur attempt.

Blade Sizes for Fades

Every fade uses a progression of cutting lengths from skin (0mm) to the desired top length. The key is creating smooth transitions between each length zone. Here is the standard blade progression for each fade type:

The Lever Technique

The clipper lever is your most powerful blending tool. Most professional clippers have a taper lever on the side that adjusts the cutting blade position relative to the guide blade. When the lever is closed (all the way down), the blade cuts at its shortest setting. When open (all the way up), it cuts at its longest setting — approximately 0.5mm longer than closed.

This 0.5mm range between open and closed lever is what creates the seamless gradient in a fade. The technique: start with the lever closed at the bottom of the fade zone. Make your pass. Then open the lever halfway and make another pass slightly higher. Open the lever fully and make a final pass at the top of the zone. This creates three micro-lengths within a single blade size, eliminating visible lines.

Guard-to-Blade Transition (The Hard Part)

The most common mistake in fading is leaving a visible line where the guard ends and the bare blade begins. This line — called the "guard line" or "shelf" — happens because the guard adds length unevenly across the cutting path.

To eliminate the guard line: use the flicker technique — with the guard attached, angle the clipper at 45 degrees and flick upward and outward at the transition point, lifting the blade away from the head mid-stroke. This feathers the transition rather than creating a hard line. Practice on a mannequin head until the flicker becomes muscle memory.

Blade Maintenance for Fade Quality

Fade quality deteriorates predictably as blades dull. Signs that specifically affect fades: the blade pulls at the transition zone (where cutting length changes rapidly), visible lines appear between zones that previously blended smoothly, and the lever feels "sticky" (debris buildup between the blades reduces lever range).
