Clipper Blade Steel Grades Explained: 420, 440A, 440C, Carbon Steel & Ceramic

Understanding clipper blade steel types — 420 stainless, 440A, 440C, high-carbon steel, and ceramic. Hardness, edge retention, corrosion resistance, and which grade is best for each application.

The steel grade of a clipper blade determines everything about its performance — how sharp it gets, how long it stays sharp, whether it rusts, and how much it costs. Yet most blade packaging says nothing more than "stainless steel" or "Japanese steel," leaving buyers to guess at the actual material quality. This guide explains what each steel grade means in practical terms.

420 Stainless Steel

The base-level blade steel. Contains 12-14% chromium for corrosion resistance but only 0.15% carbon, which limits hardness to HRC 50-54. At this hardness, the cutting edge dulls relatively quickly — professional barbers would need to sharpen every 2-3 weeks with daily use. However, 420 resists rust extremely well, making it suitable for humid environments and blades that may not be dried after cleaning.

420 is standard in consumer-grade clippers (sub-$30 retail) and replacement blades sold at pharmacy/drug stores. It is not used in professional-grade equipment.

440A Stainless Steel

A step up with 0.60-0.75% carbon content, achieving HRC 55-57. This is the "minimum professional grade" — edge retention is adequate for weekly use (non-professional) and monthly sharpening cycles for light professional use. Corrosion resistance remains very good due to 16-18% chromium content.

440A is common in mid-range professional blades and is the typical grade when a manufacturer says "Japanese stainless steel" without specifying further.

440C Stainless Steel

The professional standard. 0.95-1.20% carbon content enables HRC 58-62 after proper heat treatment — hard enough to hold a keen edge through hundreds of haircuts between sharpenings. 440C is what we use at SUMTHIN for all our professional hair blades and A5 detachable blades.

The trade-off: 440C has slightly lower corrosion resistance than 420 or 440A due to the higher carbon content. This means proper maintenance (oiling, drying after cleaning) is important. With proper care, 440C blades last 3-4x longer between sharpenings than 440A blades.

When a blade is described as "surgical steel" or "premium stainless," it is typically 440C. Our blades undergo vacuum heat treatment to achieve consistent HRC 60 hardness across the entire cutting edge — see how our blades are manufactured.

High-Carbon Steel (Non-Stainless)

Traditional high-carbon steel (1095, SK5, or similar) with 0.90-1.03% carbon and minimal chromium (under 12%, so not technically "stainless"). Achieves HRC 60-65 — the hardest and sharpest of the steel options. High-carbon blades take the keenest edge and are preferred by old-school barbers who sharpen their own blades.

The major drawback: high-carbon steel rusts. Without consistent oiling and drying, these blades develop surface rust within days in humid environments. They require more maintenance than stainless options. This is why most modern clipper blades use 440C stainless — similar hardness with much better corrosion resistance.

Ceramic (Zirconia, ZrO2)

Ceramic blades are not metal at all — they are made from zirconium oxide (ZrO2), a technical ceramic with hardness exceeding HRC 80 equivalent. Ceramic blades stay sharp 5-10x longer than steel blades and run 75% cooler during use (ceramic has much lower thermal conductivity than metal). They are immune to corrosion and do not react with chemicals in disinfectants.

Ceramic blades are typically used as the moving (upper) blade paired with a steel stationary (lower) blade. This combination provides the cool-running and long-life benefits of ceramic with the structural strength of steel. See our ceramic blade catalog and ceramic vs steel comparison.

The downsides: ceramic is brittle — dropping a ceramic blade on a hard floor can chip or crack it (steel blades survive drops). Ceramic blades also cost 2-3x more than equivalent steel blades. For pet groomers doing long sessions where blade heat is a concern, the premium is well justified.

How to Identify Blade Steel Grade

Unfortunately, many manufacturers do not clearly label the steel grade. Indicators of quality: price (sub-$10 blades are almost certainly 420 or 440A), stated hardness (HRC 58+ indicates 440C or equivalent), "surgical" or "premium" stainless (usually 440C), "Japanese steel" without further detail (usually 440A), and our blades clearly state 440C on the packaging.
