Precision trimmers are the finishing tools in every barber's kit — used for outlining, edging, detailing, and cleaning up after the clipper work. The blade type determines what the trimmer excels at. Understanding the three main blade types — T-blade, U-blade, and foil — helps you choose the right tool for each task.

T-Blade Trimmers
The T-blade is the most popular precision trimmer blade type. Its wide, flat profile creates crisp, straight lines for outlines, edge-ups, and shape-ups. The exposed corners allow precise corner work and lettering/design carving. The wider cutting surface (40-42mm) covers more area per stroke, making lineup work faster.
T-blades can be zero-gapped (the cutting blade is adjusted flush with or slightly behind the guide blade) for extremely close cutting at 0.0-0.2mm. This is essential for skin fades and sharp line-ups. Our Model 125 T-Blade and Model 183 T-Blade are designed for zero-gap capability with precise tooth alignment.

U-Blade Trimmers
U-blades (also called standard or rounded trimmer blades) have a narrower cutting width (32-38mm) with rounded corners. The rounded profile makes them safer around ears and contours — less risk of nicking than a T-blade's exposed corners. U-blades are preferred for detail work in tight areas, around-the-ear cleanup, and neckline shaping on clients with sensitive skin.

Foil Shavers
Foil shavers use a thin perforated metal screen (the "foil") over oscillating or rotating blades. Hair enters through the foil perforations and is cut by the blade underneath. Foils cut at skin level (0.0mm) without the blade touching skin — making them the safest option for bald fades, clean necklines, and head shaves.
Foil shavers are not technically "trimmer blades" but serve a complementary role in the fade workflow: clipper → trimmer (outline) → foil shaver (skin fade zone).
Choosing the Right Blade Type
Most professional barbers carry at least one T-blade trimmer and one foil shaver. The T-blade handles outlining, line-ups, and detail work. The foil handles skin fades and neck cleanup. A U-blade trimmer is a useful addition for barbers who work on sensitive skin or do extensive around-the-ear detailing.
